Double-layer magnetic recording with multilayer perceptron decoder for single-reader/two-track reading in BPMR systems

To expand an areal density of hard disk drives, bit-patterned magnetic recording (BPMR) using a patterned medium instead granular as employed in perpendicular is attracting much attention the next-generation technology. further increase storage capacity BPMR, multi-layer can be combined with BPMR. Therefore, this paper considers double-layer single-reader/two-track reading technique for staggered BPMR system, which performed together rate-3/5 modulation code. This proposes to utilize multilayer perceptron decoder decode and estimate log-likelihood ratio value recorded bit sequence that obtained from equalized channel. Simulation results show at bit-error rate 10−4, proposed system achieve improvement gain about 1.2 decibel if compared regular single-layer medium, even presence media noise.
